Inspirational Teacher /Lecturer of the Year

This accolade will be awarded to a teacher/lecturer who brings learning to life by passionately engaging and inspiring children/young people to fulfil their potential. We are looking for a teacher who has made consistent progress across the year in terms of students development, has delivered above and beyond, this may be investing time in extra-curricular activities or in supporting a particular student or year group.

Nominations to be made by students, parents or the Student Council or the Head Teacher.


Community Award

This award will go to an educational establishment that has developed close community partnership links and can supply examples of specific community led projects. The judges will be looking for a school/college/academy who have created beneficial links with local community groups that have delivered real results.

Teaching Assistant of the Year

The winner will be a teaching assistant who makes an outstanding contribution to the life of a school, academy or college. The judges will be looking from someone who actively engages and collaborates with others in supporting pupils’ learning and development. Please supply examples of how this person stands out from their peers.

Administration/Support Staff of the Year

This award is for individuals or teams for their outstanding contribution to supporting pupils, students, teachers and the life of the school/college/university. Examples of support roles include: administrators, technicians,  eceptionists, business managers, etc. who always give exceptional service and make a real difference to their educational establishment.

Innovation in the Arts Award

This award will go to a school, academy or college that can demonstrate how they have unleashed culture in the classroom. The judges will be looking for schools or colleges who have inspired creativity in the classroom and stretched their pupils’ horizons in the realm of the arts. This could be through imaginative and innovative projects, exhibitions, events and outings, or through creative use of classroom space and school facilities, or through connections in the community which have enhanced their City of Culture agenda. Please supply evidence to support your submission.

Against All Odds Award

This award will go to an individual or group of people who rose to meet an exceptional challenge which affected themselves as individuals or their establishment during the academic year 2017/18. The judges will be looking for an individual or group of children who have overcome adversity yet who have still managed to achieve academically.

STEM AWARD (Sciences, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics)

We are looking for a STEM Ambassador, a school that have developed an innovative and effective approach to encouraging pupils to engage with science, technology, engineering or maths. This could be a particular project that has a focus on one element of STEM or can be an initiative that encompasses all four areas. We are looking for a school that can give examples of respect, ambition and achievement in STEM which embraces all pupils and eliminates inequity.

Healthy School Award

This award recognises an individual or school with clear evidence of the value of adopting a healthy food and physical activity culture. Entries should highlight the link between physical activity, food education and the food that is served within the school. The judges are looking at how the individual or school has raised the bar in the area of sport, food education and school food. We are looking for superb new innovative ideas that make the school stand-out head and shoulders above the rest.

Apprentice/Placement Student of the Year

This award will go to a student who has completed an apprenticeship within the academic year (2017-8) or is working towards an apprenticeship. Judges will be looking for someone who has made outstanding progress in both their practical work and in their studies and who have made an exceptional contribution to their workplace.

Outstanding Sporting Achievement

An award for the educational establishment (catering for any age group) that can demonstrate an outstanding commitment to both encouraging students to be active on a regular basis with a wide participation in sports and other physical pursuits and achieving success in those activities. The judges will be looking for schools/colleges/academies who have delivered above the curriculum and can provide evidence to show success with a positive impact.

Lifetime Contribution Award

This prestigious award will go to someone who, according to the judges, has had a significant and positive impact on education in Hull and East Riding over a period of years. Unlike the other Mail Golden Apples Award categories, for the Lifetime Contribution Award there will be no nomination process or shortlist published. Only the winner will be invited to the event.
